Understand that, unless an employee has a contract, he works at the pleasure of the employer. That means, sanctions are at the discretion of the employer. They can fire you, if they so desire. After all, it’s the companies money, until you earn it.
As for punching out for an employee who left early, that is aiding and abetting the theft of money for the company. It makes them buy a service (the employees services), which they did not receive.
When you hire on in an hourly job, there is an implied contract that you will supply them an hour of your time, to use for their betterment (not, yours) for an hour of their pay. If you do not supply an hour for an hour’s pay, you are stealing- you become a thief. It doesn’t matter if your friend’s company, or, the company where you used to work, allows you to email, or, make paper airplanes on company time. Each company makes its own rules for use of the time they buy from you. If you don’t like it, get another job- one where you can make up your own rules.
