$160 million contract for DIA re-design project
Completed in 1995 for around $7 billion, Denver International Airport supposedly needs to be re-designed — already.
Proposed changes will accommodate a new train station for an as-yet-imaginary lightrail link to the airport, and will make the entire terminal a “sterile area.” More “sterile area” means passengers will spend more money on food and shopping…supposedly.
People close to the project say management fees for the whole shebang should come in around $80 million. But Kim Day, manager of DIA, is asking Denver City Council to sign off on a whopping $160 million contract for Parsons Transportation to oversee the project.
Why the huge discrepancy? Well, in case they want to build “something” or manage the contract in a way that would double project management costs, of course. They’re not sure what they’ll do with all that capacity, they told council. They just want to have it, just in case.
Having to come back and ask council for more — all that pesky public scrutiny stuff — would be inconveniently time-consuming, according to Day.
